Woke up in KY to a beautiful blue sky, promising sunny day. We hit the road at 7 for a 340 mile trip to Boonville, MO. Mr Charley took I24w to I57N to I64W to I70W crossing into IL & into MO. The ride was nice, crossing the TN River, OH River, MS River & the MO River. They were all high & rushing, but no flooding ( thank God)!
We get to the campground in Boonville took one look & said “Oh H&!! No!” It was a big gravel parking lot with some pretty rough looking rigs parked around so, we hit the road again. Luckily, we didn’t have pre-paid reservations, or we would’ve lost that money.
Let me explain, when Mr Charley maps out our route, he tries to keep the drive to about 300 miles a day, anything over just makes it longer than it needs to be. Well, we had reservations in St Joe, MO for Thursday & Friday and, it’s only about 160 more miles, so I called to see if we could get in a day early & stay 3 nights. So, we hit the road again. Well, remember that beautiful sunny, blue sky? It wasn’t that way a little further up the road! As the clouds rolled in it got darker & darker and windier & windier! We got off & tried to find a place to park until it passed over. I saw a mall on the side, so we took the exit, drove around & couldn’t figure out how to get in, so we finally found a road that led to a parking lot we could get in & out of. About the time we stopped, that wind & rain started pelting HAIL! The temp dropped from around low 70s to mid 50s and the lightning & thunder were enough to make Cheyenne jump up front & get in my lap. I’ve got some pics below. The hail wasn’t that big, but it sure surprised me when I saw it! The storm didn’t last long, moving away from our route & we got back on the road thankful we were safe. Another reason why we leave early & drive short distances to allow for unexpected surprises. We had another 2 hours to get to St Joe & it was already 2:00. We try to land by 2:00, which gets us out of rush hour traffic, gets us in early enough to relax & maybe get a little nap in before dinner. Well, not today. Thank God, the storm was heading across, not in our path. We made a quick stop so I could make a couple of sandwiches & headed on up the road.
We landed safely at Sharp RV and as soon as we pulled in, I saw Sonny & Stella were here! They were our neighbors at Paradise Oaks! Mr Charley got our rig backed in, & we set up. As he waited for his satellite to quick searching, I fixed him a drink! (He doesn’t drink much, but he needed it today). He drove us 500+ miles through some rough weather & backed us into a spot that isn’t as big as we’re used to. He earned this one! I walked the girls & got back & fixed myself a drink.
Like Mr Charley says “ it’s an adventure”!
Since we set out to only stay 1 night in Boonville & not unhook, I had pulled out some of Jason’s pulled pork for dinner, so rather than Mr Charley cooking a full meal, we had pulled pork sandwiches, slaw & Chips.
Did I tell you the satellite didn’t connect? Trees aren’t always a good thing to have around. That’s OK though, Mr Charley has lots of movies, so we put one in. At this point we’re both whipped but it’s still light outside! Time change hit us back in KY, so we did a “fall back” and gained an hour.
That’s alright, too. We landed safely, have a roof over our head, good food in our belly & a dry warm place to sleep. Life is good & we are blessed.
Tomorrow we check out St Joe & Stetson hats for Mr Charley (like he needs another one) & hopefully some black boots for me!
Here’s some pics from today’s ride:
Small hailstones, but it was hail!
Thanks for letting us share your adventure. Nice!!
