Since we didn’t have a long drive from Sparks to Hawthorne, we left a little later than usual and took our time. The sun was up as we made our way to I-80.
The wild mustangs were making their way to the river
And the road was pretty clear
Then we get off I-80 onto NV-439 to US-95 ALT.
What a change of scenery! No more RENO big city casinos, we’re talking long, lonely desert highway. It was pretty, though.
Then I see a sign for TOPGUN SPEEDWAY, somewhere in/near/through Fallon,NV
(Wherever we were). Since I still had cell service, I Googled it (‘cause I sure didn’t see where it was). Check it out! They have some pretty cool races there! Who knew? 🤷🏻♀️
On we go through some desolate country, then as we got about 20 miles away, look what popped up!
This is Walker Lake (Google it, there’s a cool, but sad history there)
As we got closer, it got bigger and prettier.
And, look at the sign blinking! Woohoo! There’s some Bighorns up there!
(Didn’t see any,but I looked hard!)
It was still early to check-in, so we stopped in for a little snack and rest.
It was nice and the girls liked it.
As we made our way to the campground,we saw signs for a military base.
Hawthorne Army Depot
WORLD’S LARGEST AMMO DEPOT
We got checked into Whiskey Flats RV Park. It’s pretty nice, clean concrete slabs, gravel yards. The guy said he was booked full the night before for some Festival they have every year out in the desert. Maybe it was their version of Woodstock? IDK 🤦🏻♀️ We’re just happy we reserved a place for the next 3 nights.
You wouldn’t believe how many campgrounds have no vacancy!
We got settled in, then later took a drive through town. They even have a golf course! Later after dinner, Mr Charley took me back to Walker Lake so we could watch the rest of the sunset and maybe the stars if it got dark enough. We stayed there for a little bit, the sun went behind the mountain so I couldn’t see it too good. It started getting dark enough for the first few stars (had the moonroof open), but it got foggy over the lake, cars and trucks kept going by, yadda, yadda,yadda....so we left.
Would you believe when we got back to our site it was dark enough to sit out (for a little while) and see the stars!
It’s an adventure!
Today......we’ll be driving to YOSEMITE!
Have a good one everybody, we’re sure trying to.
