Today we head to Nellis AFB in Vegas. We’ll be here for 19 nights! Why so long you ask? It’s not for casinos and gambling ‘cause we don’t do that. Mainly it’s because we wanted to lock in a place for Labor Day weekend, also for Mr Charley’s eyeshot. And now, so we can get the trucks tailgate fixed. We’re thinking Ford may need to keep it for a few days and we’ll need to rent a car, but we’ll see.
But first, let me tell you about our visit to Death Valley NP. We bring the girls and drive around (since we’re Old and I have a gimp foot), so if I can find a GPS Guided Tour app, it saves us a lot of frustration and, it gives us a lot of insight into what we’re seeing. I didn’t see an app from Gypsy Guide, but I did see one called “Just Ahead” and man was it worth it!
I like to have a personal “guided tour”. This place is HUGE! Driving around the dessert without any guidance would not be very wise.
Here’s some info about Death Valley:
“Death Valley is the largest U.S. National Park outside Alaska at 3.4 million acres. Nearly 1000 miles of paved and dirt roads provide access to locations both popular and remote”
“One of the hottest places on the surface of the Earth, Death Valley's summer temperatures average well over 100 degrees Farenheight and at 282 feet below sea level, it is the driest place in North America.
A land of extremes, home to a great diversity of life and scenery. Although this park is known for the steady drought and record summer heat in its below-sea-level basin, also towering peaks covered in winter snow, lush oases that are a refuge for local wildlife and tiny fish, and vast fields of wildflowers that bloom after a rare rainstorm. Despite its gloomy and foreboding name, the park is home to colorful badlands, rugged canyons, beautiful sand dunes, the driest and lowest spot in North America, and the hottest spot in the world, making it a unique and interesting place to see”
I kept seeing notes that Scotty’s Castle Road was closed, so I had to Google whatScotty’s Castle was. 🤷🏻♀️
Check this out!
“Construction began on Scotty’s Castle in 1922, and cost between $1.5 and $2.5 million. A man named Walter Scott born in Cynthiana, Kentucky, also known as “Death Valley Scotty”, convinced Chicago millionaire Albert Johnson to invest in his gold mine in the Death Valley area. Walter Scott, convinced everyone that he had built the castle with money from his rich secret mines in the area and even had workers make noise when guests were over so they could pretend to be mining Scotty’s fictional mine under the house. Albert Mussey Johnson actually built the house as a vacation getaway for himself and his wife Bessie and Scotty was simply a friend.”
😂😂 I love these stories !
I took a pic of the time and temp before we got in. Yes, at 7:34 am, temp was 89
Look how beautiful and vivid the colors are!
That looks like water, but it isn’t.
It’s BORAX! Remember 20 mule team? Remember, Death Valley Days TV show?
Yep 😉👍🤷🏻♀️
And, guess what else is out there?!?
A golf course!
And a lot of campgrounds, inns and cabins! They must have a lot of desert festivals and night gazing
Just look at the different mountain scenery.
Down to 110, my pic showing 112 got cut off.
My altimeter app shows we were -264 ft below sea level, but the lowest point wasactually -282
Mr C pointed out this trip we’ve been to the uppermost NW point (in WA) and now the lowest elevation here. How cool is that! 🤷🏻♀️
It was a pretty cool place to see and hearabout. We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful country.
We headed back to the Beatty and the camper
And the wild burros
And later on, we hit the pool!
It was a good day and I’m so thankful Mr Charley and I can go and see these places. I’m not thrilled with Vegas, but we do have tickets to some good shows, so that helps.
Have a good one everybody, we’re sure trying to.
