All I can say is, when Uncle Sam finds land for a military base, he makes sure it’s vast and SECLUDED!
Since we didn’t come over from Reno or up from Sacramento, there were no directions to the right gate access with the camper. When we called, they couldn’t even tell us! So, between the truck navigation, Google Maps, our road atlas and some common sense navigation skill, we finally made it around to the right gate. Mr Charley handled it like a pro, but there was a couple of times we wondered where the road was leading to. There’s a lot of road construction going on, that kept rerouting us which didn’t help matters.
Yes, there is a Timbuctoo!
Once we got in and found our site, we kicked on the a/c and chilled the rest of the day.
The drive itself was pretty stressful, not traffic wise, but driving through the mountains really put Ol’ Red to the test! The elevation wasn’t so bad (3,000 ft), the grade wasn’t that bad (6% or less) the road condition wasn’t bad, maybe it was the heat.
Here’s some pics along the way:
This is Mt Shasta in the distance
Not sure if controlled burn or wildfire
Shasta Lake
Yep, there’s a Weed, CA
No, it’s not named for that 🤦🏻♀️
There are miles and miles of almond, walnut and olive trees. In fact, CA is the highest producer of olives in the US. Who knew!🤷🏻♀️
Also, lots of plum tree groves for Sunsweet Prunes.
Later in the afternoon, I was going to walk the girls, but the road was really hot & I didn’t want them to burn their little paws,so we tried to walk in the grass by the tree, but it’s prairie grass (dry & crunchy) not nice and green, so we came back to our own “yard”. Then, Mr Charley said “ Oh, by the way, when I checked in she said to watch for RATTLESNAKES! 😲☹️🤦🏻♀️
Today, we’re rethinking if we want to stay the entire week. ($126 for 7 nights 🤷🏻♀️)
Oh! Forgot to mention the tailgate issue! When we were in OR, we went out to the truck & the tailgate was open. Mr C closed it, went down the road & a guy flagged us that it was open again. We pulled over, checked it, closed it and moved on. Wedidn’t see anything, but not wanting to take any chances, he’s been tying it closed so it doesn’t pop open & mess up the camper. Well, when we were backing into the site yesterday, we heard something LOUD and when we checked, the tailgate had popped open & put a small dent in the camper. Thank God it was small! Thank God it happened when we were SLOWLY backing up instead of driving on the Interstate through the mountains! Needless to say, Mr C has an appointment with the Ford Service Department on Tuesday.
So, we’ll be here (or somewhere near) Yuba City until then.
It’s an Adventure!
Special hugs and prayers going out to my babies as they start school soon. Meema loves and misses you! ❤️😘
Have a good one everybody, we’re sure trying to.
