Yesterday I was excited because we were going to drive the Music Highway on the old Route 66! According to my Google search:“A musical road is a road, or section of a road, which when driven over causes a tactile vibration and audible rumbling that can be felt through the wheels and body of the vehicle. This rumbling is heard within the car as well as the surrounding area, in the form of a musical tune.
Arguably the most successful musical road in the USA, this one’s near exit 170 on today’s State Highway 333. It’s in Tijeras, just east of Albuquerque, New Mexico and south of Interstate 40. Hit the grooves at the right speed (45 mph) to hear the familiar strains of “America the Beautiful.”
Built in 2014, this musical highway was a joint project between the National Geographic Society and the state’s Department of Transportation. Unfortunately, it’s fallen into disrepair, and there are no longer road signs calling attention to it. However, you can still drive it and hear the sounds of nostalgia”.
With all that said, we were expecting signs to get us ready for it. We saw this:
And, this:
But WE NEVER SAW THIS!
We drove right over it, and by the time my brain realized it WAS MUSIC, it was done. It’s just a small rumble strip on the right side of the road. No sign, no warning! So, I made Mr Charley turn around and let us do it again so I could video it. Now keep in mind, Mr Charley has a B.A.T! (Big A$$ Truck). We’re driving down a long two lane road, so by the time he found a place to turn around we had already gone about a mile or so. Once he did turn around, we had to figure out where it was, so he could turn around again so we can get ready with the GoPro and my phone. So, I rolled my window down, got ready to video, he drove through BUT our right tires weren’t lined up with the rumble strip, so we missed it! Now, Mr Charley and I would do just about anything for each other (because we’re pretty good Travel Buddies), BUT I wouldn’t ask him to do all that turn around mess again and I know he was hoping I wasn’t gonna ask him to, so we looked at each other and I said “what a disappointment that was!”
Then I quoted our mantra “Time and Money, take a little, spend a little.” It took us a little time but we had nothing else to do. So we headed back home and chilled out.
So here’s some pics of the MoonRise last night!
That was more exciting to watch than driving the Music Highway. Today we’ll “get ready to get ready” since we leave tomorrow for Amarillo.
Our thoughts and prayers for our friends and family in FL and those in the path of Hurricane Idalia.
And since we’re two hours behind the east coast, here’s a pic of this mornings sunrise:
Have a good one everybody.
