SS Klondike was the name of two sternwheelers. Both ran freight between Whitehorse & Dawson City along the Yukon River from 1929-1936 and 1937-1950, respectively.
Klondike I (built in 1929), traveled down the Yukon River, and ran aground in 1936 and the British-Yukon Navigation Co. (a subsidiary of the White Pass & Yukon Railway) salvaged much of the wreckage to build Klondike II.
Klondike II carried freight until 1950. Due to the construction of a highway connecting Dawson City and Whitehorse, many sternwheelers were decommissioned. In an attempt to save her, she was converted into a cruise ship, but shutdown in 1955 due to lack of interest. The ship was donated to Canada Parks & is still gradually being restored.
Yukon sternwheelers were powered by wood-fired boilers.
I’m glad I didn’t have to feed that stokehold. On average, it burned about a cord of wood an hour. The fire-tube boiler holds 4000 gal of water & operated at 184 lb. psi.
Here’s some of the food, supplies & equipment they carried:
The barrels contain 10 doz. pints of beer EACH!

Here’s the menu & glimpse of first class dining:
On the way out, we saw this in the parking lot. It’s an enclosed side car on a motorcycle. After that we went downtown to the Visitor Center, then got some lunch & back home to check on the girls.
We had such a great time with Anne & Briggs & since they were leaving in the morning, they came over later for Happy Hour and had a nice visit.
Since we’ll be here for a week, we figured we’ll pace ourselves since there’s only a handful of things to see & do here.
That's about it for today. Have a good one everybody!
RV Riding is pacing yourself to take it all in
